About Freshwater Pearl

Pearls are like humans, no two are the same. Though they look similar, they have their own unique features and characteristics to separate themselves from others. Generally pearls are distinguished by seven characteristics: nacre, luster, orient, surface, size, shape, and colour. The first four characteristics being most important areas (especially for freshwater pearls). With nacre, luster, and orient closed tied to each other.

A pearl is formed by the oyster (or mussel for freshwater pearls) when a parasite enters inside. As a defense against the parasite's irritation, the oyster coats it in nacre, thus the substance of the pearl. How the nacre is coated determines the luster (the glow of the pearl); the orient (iridescence of the pearl); and the surface (distinguishing marks, blemishes, and uniformity).

Of course size is important as with any other gemstone (bigger is more expensive). But with shape and colour, we at Pause like the uniqueness of pearls to be proudly displayed. We want you to explore the wonders of the non-traditional shapes (baroque and keishi) and the colours that nature blessed them with. So take a moment to pause and reflect on your style.

Caring for your pearls

Unlike other gemstones and materials used in jewelery, pearls are organic and porous, thus they require more delicate care. The main draw of pearls, its luster, is easily diminished or destroyed by the pollutants of perfume, hair spray, and our own nature oils. Therefore, pearls should be the last piece of your attire put on after you have set your hair and scent. After wear, we recommend wiping down your pearls with a damp soft cloth to clear any pollutant from the day. They should be left to air dry on a soft cloth.

When storing your pearls, remember they can easily scratch off each other's lusters, therefore you should try to store them in a soft cloth pouch or wrapped in a soft cloth. If you have not worn your pearls in a while, please allow to come out and enjoy some fresh air (remember they are organic!). One last note for caring your pearls is to have them inspected for wear about every 12 to 18 months. If there are any signs of wear, immediately have them restrung. With proper care, pearls will be your closest friends for many years.
